Why Solar Energy Efficiency Will Dramatically Improve
Solar energy efficiency is one of the most important considerations for the well being of future generations who will live on this planet, as the supply of fossil fuels will inevitably run out. The vast majority of appliances of both low and high technology use electrical power, or at least can be adapted to use electrical power, so the need to find sustainable sources of electricity is paramount. Along with wind power and geothermal energy, solar power represents one of the largely untapped resources which we must learn to harvest for the future.
Once solar photovoltaic panels have developed to a high enough standard, it will be possible to generate electricity for as long as the sun continues to shine. Although this technology obviously works best in areas which experience hot temperatures and clear skies for long periods of time, it is by no means limited to these. Homes in temperate zones can still install solar panels to provide some of the electricity they need, and in time it is possible that they will be able to generate all of their power from the sun. This is still an evolving technology.
It is also possible to build installations which will generate power for an entire community. This ha he advantage that the structure can be built with a direct view of the south, something which may be difficult on an individual house. These installations can be built with multiple panels, and with panels as large as can be erected on the structure. It is also possible to use mirrors so that sunlight is reflected back into the photovoltaic panel to create an even greater concentration of heat and light. It would even be possible to build giant installations in tropical desert regions which could generate colossal amounts of power.
Eventually, solar energy efficiency combined with improvements in wind and geothermal technology will see that all power is generated from renewable sources. This power will also need to be stored, and it will need to power the transportation infrastructure of the future. The most advanced rail based transportation technology, using magnetic levitating trains, already uses electrical power. The technology already exists for faster trains which give out no emissions, and if energy is generated from renewable sources the system will be fully sustainable.
Hydrogen is the best form of storage for energy which is generated from solar or wind power, which must necessarily be sporadic in the amounts generated. By using hydrogen as effectively a storage battery, it is possible to generate electricity in this way and use it whenever it is needed. There are already fuel cell buses in operation which use this technology, and which are capable of being fueled from hydrogen service points along the highway. Technology is already in place to switch both rail and road transportation over to renewable sources when it becomes cost effective and practical to do so. As of now, the expense of these vehicles and the expense of converting the highways to hydrogen power is prohibitive, but incentives will change.
Improvements in solar energy efficiency will see this form of electricity generation becoming increasingly common in the years to come. Even now, it is possible to get involved as one of the pioneers of this technology if you have the right type of home and roof. You can install solar panels which will provide a part of the power you need, and there may even be financial incentives available to help you do so. Ever greater numbers of people will be taking up this challenge as the prices fall and we see a greater level of solar energy efficiency.
